After the way his (and the Avs') season has gone, this is hardly a surprise. Not sure we get much in return (Elliott from the Sens), but that probably doesn't matter much anyway since it was doubtful Andy would be coming back next year after kinda sucking this year. Elliott? Never heard of him. But some hockey nerd I work with who follows the Eastern Conference closely says the 25-year old has some upside. Until the defense gets fixed, it probably doesn't make a ton of difference who is getting peppered in net.

This season so far. Hard not to hanker for the olden days where you didn't let in 5 goals in the 1st period, and had a good goalie in general? We'll call those our Salad Days. (minor threat, dischord 015)
Pretty laughable game tonight. Sacco has to be shaking in his boots a little bit. Hard to figure the slide on some level, but it is ugly, of that there is no doubt. When you're calling 1st period timeouts and you're in the midst of a 7 game losing streak and you're en route to offering up 5 goals in the period, you know things are bad. This is what the franchise has become? Worst in the entire league in GAA? Thankful for the Oilers so that your point totals are not the worst in the conference? Forsberg dicking around for a couple road losses, and then "retiring", distracting a team that looks pretty lost. It's no longer cute.

Admittedly, I didn't catch the most recent week in Avalanche bed shitting due to time spent in LA, where it seems only the Lakers and the NBA are acknowledged as sports. When I was boarding my plane home last night, I was actually convinced I cared about the Lakers-Celtics game that was in progress. That's how quickly I had been brainwashed. Thankfully, it only took about 15 minutes of watching the game in the airport and on my Frontier free preview Direct TV to realize I couldn't give a shit about this "huge game." Couldn't even bring myself to drop the $6 to watch the Nugs-Mavs game that would soon follow the conclusion of that game. Turns out that was a pretty damn good game for the Nugs judging by the final score and seeing the last 5 seconds of highlights. I just figured my money was better spent on $5 gin and tonics. But I digress....

The point of this post wasn't to rip on LA sports or the NBA, it was to complain about how the Avs have treated their once promising and entertaining season like a five dollar hooker. What the hell happened to this consistently resilient team since the week before the All-Star break? With their suspect defense, crap goal tending, and never-ending series of injuries, it wasn't terribly difficult to predict a lull in the offense at some point and would spell trouble. But I wasn't expecting it to be this prolonged and hideous. Again, I haven't seen the last few games, but judging from the scores and what I saw right before and after the all-star break, I'm going to say this team isn't playing with much heart right now (no PP goals in like 5 games?!?!). And now the Avs are relying on He Without Spleen to inject some life back into a season that is hanging by a thread. I'm not sure it can happen. But I guess it will be more interesting to watch them coast toward a lottery pick.

I know that this is a Denver Broncos fanbloghumpfest but I am here to declare my support for thee Green Bay Packers as they are set to do battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers. I know that in the past I have made the mistake of publicly switching NFL loyalties from the Broncos to the Raiders on this blog (I'm back to the Broncos now. It was a mistake and I admitted it.) but I can justify my one day fan support for the Packers. Here is my reasoning:

This is not the Brett Favre led Packers of old. I hated you in the 90's but now I'm backing you for one day in 2011.
What happened the last time the Packers won a Super Bowl? That's right. The Broncos won back-to-back Super Bowls. Huh? Huh? It could happen.
These Packers have done everything I have asked of them. I asked them to humiliate Jay Cutler and expose him for the backwards hat wearing, thumb-sucking, skippity-skippy-skip, interception hucking, pouting cry baby that he is. They did exactly that. (How's the knee Jay? Think you'll be there for Training Camp?)
I hate the Steelers and their fans. Steeler fans are by far the most obnoxious fans that I have witnessed inside Mile High Stadium. Oh, how I hope they lose this game. By the way, they are the reason why Jake the Snake Plummer is playing handball at this very moment WITHOUT a Super Bowl ring.

Witness this, by wearing these here shoes I hereby hope the Packers win today.

If I can be indulged an odd-ass post, sometimes you just need to be reminded of the good times...as I randomly post an "old" picture that I didn't take, (and have no clue how I possess) of a couple luminaries who rattle around these parts now and again. Instead of the good fortune of being at Mile High that day, I was enjoying my ownself in a parallel existence at TD's house. Champ take it to the house on Brady? Yes.

Broncos defeat the Pats at Mile High to go on to the AFC Championship Game back in January of '06. Though that AFC Championship game would ultimately suck...still weird to think the B'cos were a game away from a Super Bowl about 5 years ago.

You might remember that on November 1, 2010 I said that there was no way that I could ever root for the Seattle Seahawks. Well, I was wrong. I was very wrong.
This week I'm hoping that the Seattle Seahawks beat the living buhjesus out of Jay Cutler. I know that many of the football purists are hoping for a Bears vs. Packers NFC Championship. I am not.
I am personally hoping that the Seahawks knock that horrible toupee off of Cutler once and for all and expose him as the blameshifting wuss that we came to know and loathe here in Denver.
Sour grapes? Maybe. Personally I'm glad he's gone.

A defensive coach....I'm sure that wasn't an easy decision for Elway, but it was the right one. Dennison might have been the more fan-friendly choice, but I still have nightmares of when he was the Special Teams Coach for the B'cos and it was keystone cops every time his squad was on the field. I'm sure he's progressed as a coach, but hiring the more experienced coach, who has had some pretty decent success with limited means, is a sound move and should pacify the legions of fans that have been in an uproar since (insert lame McSomethingInsult joke here) took over. 2010 Season Finally Over, Now Get To Work (Resign Champ)

Although there was some intrigue down the stretch of the season watching Timmy take some snaps and show flashes of promise, things are now going to start getting mighty interesting in Bronco Land. After getting thoroughly dominated by the Chargers during the better part of today's game, Timmy almost mounted a logic-defying comeback. Good thing it didn't happen, as it would have dropped the B'cos down several positions in the draft. With the 2nd overall pick, we should be able to draft that monster DE from Clemson and start rebuilding something resembling a defense. I'm not sold on Timmy yet (it's too early to draw definite conclusions whether he'll succeed in the NFL), but he has shown enough promise and the defense has shown more than enough shittiness to make it clear where the draft has to be directed....oh, and resign Champ already.

It has been largely leaked that Elway will become VP of Operations. Why not? If nothing else, it lends some credibility to an organization that has been hemorrhaging credibility at an alarming rate for some time now. The only downside I see is that the team needs to focus on defense, which might not be Elway's forte....a good first move would be to resign Champ.

While the top draft selection is clearly a make-or-break decision, hiring the right coach is equally or more important. In line with the draft priority, my preferences would be a defensive-minded head coach. I'd be pretty happy if Chucky were somehow brought in (he's been a big Tebow supporter since he was drafted), but I can't see Bowlen spending the dough. Kubiak also seems unlikely, since it sounds like he'll stay in Houston. Harbaugh? I don't watch college football, so don't ask me. Should be interesting to see what transpires the next few months.....to heck with the 2010 football season.....and resign Champ please.

DRI & OT Victories

It was a late one, but the three opening bands allowed ST and I to take in the 3rd period and OT. Awesome game and another good DRI show (despite Mad Man not being on the set list). Matty D continues to amaze and is becoming rather clutch. Considering it was a 16 and over affair at the Bluebird, I would have bought the lad a beer for his efforts if he made it over from Pepsi after the heroics. This just in, the Avs are fun to watch.

Pretty impressive hat-trick from the new Av. I am a fan of Hannan, but the points and goals scored by Tomas since coming over in that trade have been huge.
Avs have won 4 in a row, 2 in a row against the defending Cup champs, and now head home for a 5 game home-stand. The time at Pepsi could be huge...
Sort of love the animosity that the back to back games generate, if tonight is any indicator....it produces very inspired, yet chippy play.
On that front, hope Stastny is OK. He received a rather awkward cross-check that sent him into the boards head first with a fairly major head of steam. Looked uncomfortable. The Avs have enough injuries already, don't need the surging center out with the rest.

Mauldin? He got himself a goal too.
Anderson? His 5-hole is looking hella soft, don't take that the wrong way, but damn, those pucks just dribble through there. He did face a shit-ton of shots, but you've got to fear those times when letting the "easy" ones through will come back to haunt the Avs when they aren't able to score 4+ a game.

I'm a little out of breath and lacking coherence after that thriller.

Shit-tonnes of goals (Cody McLeod even tallied), dicey goal tending (TURCO!), clutch late game heroics from Duchey and the newly acquired Tomas F. Great win, seeing as I was calling for Budaj in net midway through the 2nd period. I don't ever call for Budaj. Ever.

The Avs are the highest scoring team in the Western Conference. Is that surprising? Tonight's damage was wreaked without Hejduk and Stewart. Pretty much the entire season thus far has not seen the full core of the team healthy. Imagine if???
Besides the intangibles your best players bring, got to wonder what would be different if the whole roster was available and in the lineup night in and night out. The lines thrown out on the ice still manage to win games and demonstrate guts and resilience - especially when down late. Tonight was a first class example. During the Altitude post-game, Keefe and Rycroft were pretty apeshit flabbergasted, funny when they are on the air but not really able to hold any train of thought together. Is that why I'm washing lettuce and they're making the big bucks?

The Blackhawks get a chance for revenge in the ass-end of a home-and-home Wednesday in Chicago....
That is, unless the Avs can throw another Elway up on the scoreboard, then I like our chances.

Not sure what to expect if it happened, but at this point, why not. If there wasn't already a legion of fans out there clamoring for God Boy, getting rolled by a shit-ass NFC West team (the B'cos are a combined 1-3 against that illustrious division, for those scoring at home) while Neck Beard has an even worse game than last week's stinker (the hell happened to him?) will certainly increase the volume. And while I don't like further cementing the recent culture of losing, the way the NFL is these days for those teams outside of the elite (which is every team other than the Pats, Steelers, Ravens (maybe?), and New Orleans (probably) - definitely not the Bears) you might as well roll the dice with the rookie QB and see what he has. Worst case scenario is that he proves he's not an NFL QB and the team gets a higher draft pick. Best case is that he shows he's a player and you have something positive to look to next year (and will still have a good pick). By the way, that was one of the most boring football games I've ever kind of watched. Studesville doesn't appear to be the answer.....

But then hopefully not truly become Al Davis and run the franchise completely into the ground within the decade. shit.

I'm ill prepared to offer much beyond emotion (and a Josh McD final win percentage of .393. yikes). I'm pretty surprised really that this happened mid-season...I guess things are working out for the Vikes and Cowboys after their jettisons. still doesn't really make sense to me. I'm rambling, but am pretty curious what the "fanbase" thinks.

The Broncos will probably win out and get a shitty draft pick and draft an overrated prospect that will be cut in two years.

Van Wild....I mean Sam Bradford further adds to Broncos embarrassment by completely having his way with Broncos' defense. Familiar no pass rush, no forced turnovers, inability to cover the quick slant, etc...Meanwhile, the offense was almost a carbon copy of the SD game for the first three quarters. Great start in the first quarter and then a nose dive (which didn't help the struggling defense). Making matters worse, we coughed it up a couple of times at key times. While a furious comeback in the 4th quarter made it somewhat interesting to watch down the stretch, you never had the feeling there was a legit chance. Completely sucking for two quarters of the game has a tendency to do that. Combine this home loss with a nice game for Cutler (he's really turned into a great game manager), and chalk this up as another shitty Sunday in the NFL. At least the Raiders lost I guess. While I cannot help myself but root for the B'cos, it's clear the number one overall pick is in our sights. Can't imagine it will be the present coach making that selection though....

A very nice way to bounce back from a frustrating and pointless two-game Canadian road swing with a big win against a team that could have leap-frogged the Avs in the standings. After a pretty listless looking first period, the Avs flat pucked in the next two periods and applied a hurting on the Wild. My Main Man Mauldin collects four points (2G, 2A) and the #1 Star in what could be a breakout game. Once again, a very fun game to watch, even when Boods let in a obligatory softie that made it 5-3 toward the end of the 2nd period (way too close for comfort at the time). A couple 3rd period goals ensured that this game never got too interesting down the stretch.

As great as this game was, a mystery injury to Stewie is a concern (not to mention what appeared to be a bad knee injury to Winny). Hard to say what happened, considering Stewie easily got the best of the preceding scrap. Let's hope both injuries are minor.

7 goals against the Wild? The ghost of the Jacques Lemaire-coached version of this team is rolling in its grave.

After such a promising start, that game was plenty brutal to watch (even with the good beer specials and a comped 3 Dogs meal). I don't know if it was the fake punt that took the air out of the defense after two good series, but they never looked the same afterward. Rios will always get his points (especially against us it seems), but the defensive squad looked defeated thereafter. One thing that drives me crazy about this defense (and has been the case for the last few years) is how few turnovers we get. That Bailey INT was really just a great defensive play that saved a long pass completion. Didn't really work in the traditional turnover sense in that it would have been 4th down and the punt would have been a similar result most likely....Offensively, as Tirico so aptly put at one point, they just looked out of sync. A few good plays here and there, but nothing sustained after the first drive. The gadgetry was overdone. At a pretty crucial point while the game was still close, we had a 2nd and 3 inside Charger territory. A failed razzle dazzle bomb to the end zone followed by an INT pretty much closed the door on any realistic shot. I guess this team isn't going to win the Super Bowl afterall.....Oh, and he's still very hateable in the post-Cuntler era.....

Don't really know what the level of excitement is in CO/Denver, but it's pretty much party time here in this little pocket of LA (that I like to call "nik's apartment"), all due to my Rapids. Should have been 1-0 rapids after a blatant penalty kick was not called after Conor Casey was tripped (what up South!). Whatever, he scored anyway a little later on, and so did my main Kandji. I'm sure most blokes would agree, it was a pretty entertaining game all-in-all. Pickens: more than solid (some pretty awesome saves). And boom MLS Cup. Thank you Rapids.

I would also like to thank lads who have attended 'lads night out', especially those that drank a lot of beer.

There were sightings of TAZ-themed Rockies shirts this summer, but TD sent me this shot of someone this evening at the Avs game willing to high-roll and really spend bills like he means it...the TAZ leather jacket. You know that shit don't come cheap. Top dollar. Dude had to do some ledger work to figure out how many trips to the Arby's drive-thru he'd have to cut out of his routine to afford that stylish addition to his wardrobe. We're all better for it.

The game? Hell yeah. The kids continue to pile on the scoresheet (and old Hannan also adding to his assist numbers).
That 2nd period was an Avalanche shit storm of goals. Good stuff.

I know newcomer Greg Mauldin didn't score a goal in this game, but he did register his first career assist and deserves some love. A national TV audience surely ignored the MNF game and was treated to a scoring barrage from the young Avs. While the Avs defense can certainly cause some major heart burn at times, thankfully, this team can also flat score goals no matter which line is on the ice. MJL (with a pair of goals), Stastny, Yipper, The Locker, and Porter (built-in hockey nick name) all score. Not exactly a star-laden cast. And while last year's rookie sensation, Duchey, continues to struggle to find the back of the net, his play is not unnoticed. He had a sweet assist on the Yip goal and even gooned it up a bit in the 3rd. Good to see.....I need to get to a game...is that Blogger's Suite becoming available soon?

I can only imagine Chiefs Zubaz guy didn't either.
A pretty straight up shellac-ing handed to KC today. A dormant Broncos offense awakens and (gasp) runs the ball with success and Orton and Tebow both in the TD pass mix. Not likely enough to jump-start or salvage the season if you ask me...but whatever, a rare "fun" day of football viewing.

I can only imagine the revelry enjoyed by Dahmer and TD at Mile High this afternoon. I guess I chose the wrong time to pass on the chance to attend a game. Can you blame someone for being gunshy to throwdown the ducats in the wake of the Raiders debacle?

I know they don't get a lot of love around these parts, but as an alum, I feel I must acknowledge the passing of what turned out to be a shitty coaching tenure at CU. Hawk was a likeable dude (especially when compared to Barnett) who seemed to have a ton of potential to make the Buffs something worth paying attention to when he was hired. But, for whatever reason, it did not pan out. Blame the decision to bring in his son as a QB transfer, the recruiting restrictions, the chore of righting a ship gone totally wrong, the intramurals meltdown, etc. At the end of the day, the dude hardly won any games. And when it seemed like games were in the bag, KU scores 35 4th quarter points. Poof...you're done.........Good thing, because there's load of work to do before the move to the mighty PAC 10. Lots of talk about bringing back Mac. I say it's Eric Bieniemy time. The dude has pro credentials. Give him a shot....

Well, the title of this post sounds like some shitty mid-70s pub rock band, but I assure you if you saw them this evening they were anything but shitty. A 5 - zip shellacking administered to the Stars. Who are these Avs?? Porter? Dupuis? The guy with the Dutch name?

Old Raycroft actually stood fairly tall at the end of the game...the Avs were still peppering him, it was 5-0 and he hadn't been pulled. Pretty solid play to end a game where he really stood no chance, if I may be so bold (thank you aggressive Avalanche offense). Kind of liked the guy when he was on the Avs, not a ton. But admittedly I preferred him over Budaj.
Duchene gets a couple assists, Hejduk with a tally, Stewie doesn't even need to muster a point - (honestly, his skill is nuts. just watch) and Budaj gets a shutout against a team that has just been straight-up offensive as of late. Makes for some rather entertaining Saturday night hockey. Pretty sure that was the most shots the Avs have thrown at the opposing goal this year. It looked good. A fairly diametric opposite of that shit-ass Canucks game the other night where they looked sluggish and uninspired. Build on it.
Don't forget the Nugs....they completed the Dallas shutdown tonight. Had to come from behind to do it too.

I’m considering a life altering change. This is something so sudden, so impulsive that my family and I will never be the same. I would have never thought that this would have ever, EVER occurred in my life. What can I say? I’m human. This may be the biggest mistake that I make in my entire life but I can’t deny this. I must satisfy this urge. Want to know what I’m thinking?

I’m thinking of becoming an Oakland Raiders fan.

Truth is I don’t much care for the Denver Broncos anymore. I just don’t identify with them. We have a coach with a philosophy towards football that I just don’t get. Our Quarterback of the future has an extreme right wing viewpoint, we have absolutely no running game and our defense is not really worthy of words to describe it. When I really put some effort into thinking about it I have to say that I like Kyle Orton, I like DJ Williams and Brian Dawkins but that’s about it.

The Denver Broncos have become strikingly un-DenverBroncoish. I never really liked the “predominantly orange” home uniforms. I don’t like the orange Nike Swoosh stripe that runs from the pants to the jersey. I don’t like the revamped 3-4 defense and I don’t like the pass happy offense. I don’t like Invesco Field and I don’t like that ridiculous mascot Miles.

So whom should I root for if it isn’t the Broncos? I relate more to the West Coast than either the East Coast or the Midwest. This limits my choices to either the Arizona Cardinals, the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49er’s or the Seattle Seahawks.

With all respect to the Cardinals, the Seahawks and the 49er’s I cannot choose them. I hate Phillip Rivers so the Chargers are an emphatic HELL NO. This leaves me with the Oakland Raiders.

So how can I choose the team that I’ve despised for all of my conscious life? I’m kind of drawn to the Raiders’ persona. I identify with the silver and black way of life. The Raiders are like Johnny Cash, Motorhead and Public Enemy rolled into one. The Broncos have become the boy band of the NFL. There is nothing mean or intimidating about the Denver Broncos.

Am I a sellout or a bandwagon jumper? Maybe, but as a season ticket holder for the Denver Broncos I see fans wearing other NFL team garb. The Broncos could be playing the Green Bay Packers and I will see Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and/or Minnesota Vikings jerseys. WTF? You don’t see anyone wearing any other team’s stuff in Oakland. The way I see it, most Broncos fans are sellouts. Only half the people in the stadium are really Broncos fans. The rest of them sold their tickets.

OK. So if not the Raiders, I’m thinking the Saints. Maybe I’ll just give up on the NFL and stick to hockey. It's not helping that my fantasy team is 0-7-1. We’ll see what happens.

Apparently, this team is old-fashioned 'run-n-gun' style. We allow a lot goals, because we score a lot of goals. I guess I'm fine with that. A couple of those Flames goals were pretty damn soft. Not too common to decide to post something before halftime, but this game is nothing short of a disaster that I can barely stand to watch. I'd like to personally thank TD and 30PT for NOT finding me a spare ticket down on the outskirts of Mile High pregame. I think I might have bolted this game sooner than that fateful drubbing 41-3 the Chargers handed us at home back in 2007.
Just ugly on every level so far as we enter the half with the Broncos (finally) getting on the board to pull within 31 pts....at halftime. 38-7....at halftime. Down by 31 points at halftime....to the Raiders....at home.
Terrible turnovers, shitty tackling, still no running game.

The one great takeaway here is that I'm safely on the couch and not present for the 3rd straight year of the Broncos losing to the Raiders at home....oh, and Cutler threw 4 picks today which is a slight consolation as well.

UPDATE: We're just halfway through the 3rd quarter and the Raiders have already tied their franchise record for points in a game.

ANOTHER UPDATE: 3rd quarter still not over and the Raiders have now set their franchise record for points in a game. (59) They look to be enjoying piling on too.

Many of you probably don't remember Chris Stewart's first glimpse of fame prior to his NHL days with the Colorado Avalanche (pictured far left). I would like to remind all of you that he was an Actor first. Some of you may remember that he was in the movie Roll Bounce. Roll Bounce was the story of a roller dance team from the south side of Chicago. This group of roller skaters is led by Xavier (played by Mr. Wow) into competition against the Sweetwater Rollers and the superstar of Chicago roller skating, Sweetness (played by Mr. Nick Cannon).
Every Avs fan should take a minute and watch this feel good film set in 1978 Chicago while we are waiting for the Sharks.

The NHL Stewbag is really maturing and becoming a force much sooner than the MLB Stewbag. In addition to the scrappiness mentioned a couple of posts ago by ST, Stewbag is displaying a deft scoring touch. With two more goals tonight (both PP goals I believe), he's leading the team in that category. Sure it's very early in the year, but Stewie was doing this much of last year. He looks like the real deal and is very fun to watch.

The tough five-game roadie ends at 3-2. Very respectable. Nice little start to the Avs season actually....now for some home cooking...

However, stupid mistakes, miscues, and penalties help send the Broncos to another defeat. A game they could have won. A game they probably should have won.
Snapping the ball? I thought that was Centering 101. I guess our guys are still working out the kinks on that shit.
4th down, game on the line, the opposing team throws up a dying duck pass all you got to do as the defending back is turn around and merely watch the ball hit the ground. Best not to stick your hand behind you and on the receiver...much less his facemask. Damn you Renaldo Hill. Poor decision there.

I guess some good can be taken away. The running game wasn't quite as abysmal as it has been the previous 5 games. Still, that is an issue in general. Weird after all those years of running prowess to see your team dead-last in that category.
Tebow? Not sure I'm ready to buy this, but I like the "let's try something" attitude that the coaching staff is putting out there. Tebow gadget plays look to be safe diversions.
A successful mid-game onside kick? Sure, love it. (Broncos don't capitalize though)
His stats were pedestrian I believe, but Orton worked some nice passes to his corps while they were well covered by the vaunted Jets Revis/Cromartie combo that resulted in catches.
At least we're tied with the Chargers and Raiders for last place in the West...things could get nuts with some well played divisional games.

...seconds into the 1st period. Strange way to start a game that ultimately was pretty disappointing. Don't know much about these Gorton's Fishermen, but I would have assumed this would have been the "easy" game on this lengthy roadtrip. Not so.
Avs wait until the 3rd to get anything on the board. Too little too late.
2nd youngest team in the league looks to be enigmatic I'd think throughout the season. Still look forward to watching Stewart, Yip, McLeod, Duchene etc. Excitement tempered with some frustration is sure to prevail. MSG and Rangers remain before returning home.

That Hole Looks Big Enough

Been a while since I rapped at y'all. Broncos continue their futility against the Ravens. Why do we seem to play them on the road ever year? Why can't we every beat them (and no, not even when Shanny was coach)? Why does their middle field emblem cover the entire field? Why must our rushing offense and defense suck so bad? Why do we have zillions of penalties and they seemingly open up huge holes and give Flaco all day to throw without a holding penalty?

Orton continues to compile numbers and look good, but without a running game to speak of, it makes it mighty tough to sustain drives. Especially with all of the ill-timed penalties. I guess realistically speaking, winning one of these last two road games is an acceptable road swing. Would be nice to see some semblance of a running game taking shape though. The schedule will ease somewhat in the coming weeks, and winning against the Jets and Raiders at home seems doable and probably kind of necessary to get this season heading in the right direction.

Bummer of an opening game for the B'cos. Definitely looked like a winnable game, but the B'cos made too many mistakes against a Jagoffs team that made enough plays and had no turnovers (wow, how is that for cliche analysis?). There were some positive signs, but several things are concerning if they continue over the next few games.

1) Offensive line looks vulnerable. The youth of the line showed and Orton seemed to be under heavy pressure every pass play. The Jags barely had any sacks all of last season and had 3 midway through today's game.

2) Run defense wasn't impressive. Even when they had to know the run was coming, the Jags consistently busted pretty sizable runs for a good stretch of the game.

3) Special teams coverage continues to suck. Why is that the B'cos haven't been able to cover a kickoff or a punt for what seems like a decade?

4) Cutler actually won today (although the Bears got pretty damn lucky). How does one rack up almost 400 yards passing, have great field position all game, and only manage to score 19 points (7 points on a 90-yard screen pass) at home against the Lions?

Will be curious to see how the Broncs play next week at home against Seattle (a classic AFC West showdown). Should and needs to be a victory, or it could be a very long season.

Brutal game last night. After a fairly close 1st period, this looked like the 1-8 seed matchup one would expect. Lack of offensive weapons is really hurting. One regulation goal the last three games ain't gonna get it done. The lack of offensive pressure also reeking havoc on our defense, as we are in our own zone 90% of the game. Andy can't save 50 shots every night. Oh, not that its' why we're down in the series, but the lopsided penalty calls aren't helping. The Avs have by far the least amount of power plays in the playoffs. Just saying....

I'm predicting a big game for Yip in Game 6.....

I know I'm not that "up" on college football, but you'd think that the Broncos would have chosen someone in the first round I've at least heard of. Maybe I might have heard mention of him while I was whizzing past College Gameday some Saturday this past fall wishing NHL was a televised sport?

OK. All kidding aside, I HONESTLY have never heard of the WR from GaTech that the Broncos took a few spots before Tebow. But that's not too surprising.

Josh McDaniels just basically hitched his entire NFL coaching career, one would have to assume on some level, to Tim Tebow. He wheeled and dealed and traded down and then up to get him at a spot that though totally intriguing, most Kiper McShay's would call a reach. Very curious...and a tad bit exciting. Because I have heard of him.
We'll see. Got to give it to the Broncos, they often have a way of making the draft interesting. Anyone got a spare Maurice Clarett #20 jersey?

Pretty much everyone in Avs-land was making playoff plans a couple weeks ago. Popping the champagne and shit. Basically, in awe of what this team did with little, or no expectations.
Wow. You can pretty much put those plans on a permanent hold.

Tonight was a bit different than the lamp-burning affairs that have characterized this fall in the Western standings. Anderson played a decent game but the Avs couldn't put goals on the board. That said, Anderson and the defense have played like shit for about 7-8 straight games. Stretch run or no...this season was/is heading toward the trash bin, I would've liked to have seen Budaj spell Anderson at some point during this bed-shitting. I'm no Budaj fan but Andy was as far from "standing on his head" as a goalie could be, trying to hold a playoff spot as the season closes. The season is closing much faster than most thought...

After three days off, I was really looking forward to watching some Avs hockey tonight. That didn't last too long. Although they came out with some pretty strong energy in the first few minutes, that quickly turned into sloppy turnovers and easy goals for the Ducks. Now is not the time to drop consecutive games (if you can remember all the way back to Wed's loss to Calgary) when seemingly every other team in the Western Conference playoff race never loses. Combining this latest Avs loss with a Nuggets home loss to Milwaukee last night, and some rare DU hockey ineptitude, the last two nights makes for a pretty lousy Denver sports weekend (at least the Rockies 'tied' their Cactus League game this afternoon). Here's to America's favorite meth dealers and a good season premier of Breaking Bad.....

Ahhh. The healing relief that can be found in a Nuggets/T'Wolves game. So comforting. I think I might even have some candles burning softly in this freaking bubble bath shit up in here. So relaxing.

Very unlike the harsh comedown of last minute Avs choke-jobs. That's more like a prison shower.

J.R.'s spinning alley-oop dunk with about 5 minutes left was quite awesome. Should be on some sort of George Michael Sports Machine highlight reel I'd think.

The Hell Just Happened?

After a glorious first period that gave them a 3-0 lead, the Avs shit the bed in supreme fashion against NW Division rivals Vancouver at home. No one could stop Mikael Samuelsson in the 2nd period, as he registered a hat trick and got the Canucks back into the game despite more offensive fireworks from the likes of Duchene, Stewbag, and Mueller.

Totally brutal to lose such an important game, especially when it involves blowing two 3-goal leads. I've cringed while 'watching' the Canucks come back via the 'ticker' all season, but it sucks even more to feel the wrath first hand. It's pretty clear the Avs played scared after Samuelsson scored his second goal to make it 4-2 and Andy looked rather slow late in the game. Luongo, on the other hand, made some big saves in the last period after having a rough start. All you can say is they blew it. The Canucks are probably the better team, but this was a real shitty loss....when stacked alongside the recent losses to Detroit and Phoenix, this is the third bad loss in 8 days. Need to turn this around quickly, or falling out of the playoffs will be more of a concern than falling further out of first place in the NW.

And now I cry myself to sleep....

Nice to see the back-from-injury Hejduk get a goal as well. Magic hands indeed.

Why yes, I will bask in another Buffs victory over the Cornhuskers. Face Nebraska!.... again. A pretty dominating game despite a mid-game lull. An unexpected good game by Casey Crawford, who I am usually a bit critical of (but probably not at the same level as a Danny Ardoin). The dude was pretty money today though. Probably the biggest part of the win tonight is the end of that stupid Big 12 road losing streak. Nice to know that shit ain't carrying over to 2011.

One other note: After watching the game pretty much in its entirety, I can officially say that I'm sick of hearing the yammering of former NU Defensive Coordinator Charlie McBride (1989-1999?). The pud gets like 2 commercials per TV break to talk about how great Nebraska (and more specifically Nebraska football) is. I'll den the Lincoln Fox Sports feed.

No NHL games for 2 weeks...bummer. However, I am getting pretty geeked to watch some of the Olympic hockey, assuming NBC shows it. Despite a totally forgettable loss in LA last night, the Avs do head into the break having won 4 of 5 and will get to rest the majority of their players. While it sucks Andy didn't get selected to the US team, it's probably better for the Avs that he sits for 2 weeks, especially considering his workload thus far this season. And with Vancouver losing this afternoon to the Wild, Avs players can kick back knowing they share the lead in the NW Division. I think most people would have taken that before the season began. Much props to Sacco for the job he's done to this point.....

This is pretty late, but I did want to contribute this jumbotron pic of Lauren doing that damn Price is Right game (it's no Card Sharks rip off) during last night's Avs 5-2 beat down of the Blooze. 30Pack Thief with a last-minute extra ticket in what can be described as the best seats possible in the 3rd level: Row 1, Exact Center Ice. One drawback of Row 1 is that they put the cup holders on the arm rests, making it impossible to leap out of your seat to celebrate another Yip goal without doing a little hip shake. I was able to deal with it with my slender figure.

And yes, Yip fever is spreading like the plague.

With all the production from the kids on this team, you gotta wonder what they would be like if they had some consistent scoring from the vets (I'm looking at you Stastny and Wolski). It will be nice when the Duke returns....A much-needed win for this team to stop a 3-game skid combined with a rare Vancouver loss makes for a pretty nice little night of hockey.....

Nugs...probably due for a bad game at some point. Mission accomplished.

Avs...well, this was a pretty harsh 2 game run that didn't produce a single point.
Last night, Andy plays fairly spotless and then has to lose late 1-0. (a great 3rd period to watch regardless of the outcome. Tons of action)
Tonight. Not good. Modano? Losing streaks are the bane of "Cinderella seasons" and we've got one going on both fronts. I might have preferred a blowout loss in either of these games. The inability to come back fully tonight, and the late loss last night is rather crushing. Who's feeling resilient? Who likes the Misfits?

Face Nebraska

A rare DT post these days and perhaps an even rarer college hoops post in KTH-land. But, I must express some joy after watching my CU Buffs kick the shit out of Nebraska. I was sort of planning on going to the game, but decided against it due to the weather and my lack of friends. Anywho, the buffs are much more enjoyable to watch this year; they actually win games. To quote a recent avs post: Higgins? Ridic. Burks? Ridic. Actually Higgins had a very ho-hum game, but Burks was truly ridic (in every sense of the word). Everyone seems to be talking about Burks being one of the best freshman in the Big 12-slash-nation. That's not a bad thing.

And to make the game even better, the victory over Nebraska keeps NU without a win in the Big 12. You got to find something to cheer for here in Boulder, it doesn't sound like the football team is going to improve a whole lot anytime soon.

Well. I wasn't expecting to post anything good about the Nuggets after that first period.

However.....a rather surprising, resilient performance, and in the end - successful game.
No Melo. But Earl, Chauncey, and Nene get busy in the box score.
When the Nuggets win without Carmelo against a decent team, you've got to think they have playoff legs.

Anyone got any rare 8 Seconds records?
Also, I'm wondering, is Bill Hanzlik's moustache actually part of his epidermal face and made of skin? It really doesn't look like hair or whiskers or any other follicle-based thing when you take a good look at it. I know back in the day that thing was a classic straight up moustache...nowadays I'm not so sure. There's just something not quite right.

Getting sorta fairy-tale kind of shit around here...this team was LAST in the West last year. There didn't seem to be any concrete evidence that they would be any better this season, yet here they are, leading their division...3rd in the conference. Can it maintain?
I hope the Can had chants of "TUR-CO" this evening. Man, you are fucked if you have an easy two syllable name as a goalie and you are on the road playing poorly.

I love these Avs.
Young, getting it done. Tonight, no 'Duk. no Svatos. no Foote. At this point does it matter?
So many guys on this team continue to step up, contribute, and make a difference in games.
Duchene? Ridic. Stewart? Ridic. Yip? Ridic. The list goes on and on.

Andy nearly had a shutout.
McLeod gets a phantom penalty for slashing which facilitated the lone Nashville tally.
This game was just flat-out exciting and impressive. The Preds (however retarded it is that they are from TN) are a quality team... but the Avs continue to play stellar hockey, and subsequently keep a hold on the NW. (please fade, Canucks)
If this was happening in the NFL or MLB, the Avs' story would be all in your face courtesy of ESPN etc. It isn't, but it's still damn fun to watch and root for this newfangled version of the Avs. Credit is due.

Some Love For The Avs

While things get even more bizarre in McBroncoland, it's way overdue to give a hearty shout out to the NW Division-leading Avs. But with such a sparse schedule as of late, it's been hard getting into the blogging rhythm. After a harsh loss in Carolina a week and half ago, the Avs rattled off three impressive wins against the Sabres, Flames, and Devils. If I'm not mistaken, all three of these teams were first in their respective divisions going into those games. Bravo Avs. Craig Anderson has been nothing short of amazing in these games. While there is still one period of play remaining tonight, I'm fairly sure we won't blow a 4 goal (check that, 5 goal, check that 6 goal) lead against the cellar-dwelling Oil. While seemingly every game this season is a one goal affair (win or loss) and had made for some very exciting hockey to watch, a laugher victory would be more than welcome.

Not only are the Avs playing well, but the Flames appear to be heading to yet another loss tonight at the Shark Tank, which I think would put us 4 points up on them with a game in hand. Maybe losing four games in four tries this season to the Avs has those dudes rattled......

I would be remiss not to also mention some pretty quality wins for the Nuggs as of late. Much like the Avs, their recent schedule has been on the light side, but some quality wins against Orlando and Utah may relieve some of the panic surrounding recent skid while Billups and Melo were injured.

All is well in Can-Land. Maybe Dove Valley should consider getting its shit together....

Not a good way to end the season going 2-8. And what do you know, another 8-8 year where we don't make the playoffs. This game ultimately may not have mattered, but the defense looked like shit all game, we had no consistent running game (a recurring problem the latter part of the year), and Neckbeard making up for lost time with some very costly INTs. Hard to say what the future for the Broncos looks like, but I'm sure there will be some huge changes this off season....at least the Can teams are both in first place for the time being. I hope they don't follow suit.....

Caught a hot tip that the Greatest PG-Never-to-Play-on-a-Dream-Team paid a visit to the Queen City of the Plains to "coach" his Florida International University ("Miami's public research university") Panthers in a basketball contest versus your Denver University Pioneers. Sounds like the Pios pulled out a low-scoring victory while Isiah made sure that he looked good in his suit. Aside from last night's Pio win, Denver sports fans can also thank Thomas for bringing Nugget reserve Renaldo Balkman into the Association - who, BTW, is averaging 8 MPG (that's minutes/game, not his carbon footprint). As the Knick GM, perhaps Thomas thought he was making a deft choice by drafting Rolando Blackman when he chose Balkman. In any event, it's fun to see Thomas and reminisce about the glory days of the NBA - back when one might find "Jump" on a warm-up tape. (Oh, and this former Evergreen banger will be in that Bouldeh and Denver next week for the Holidays. Give a shout if you want to get rowdy.)

A somewhat unexpected drubbing of the Chiefs this afternoon in KC for the Broncos. Was expecting a closer game with the Broncos winning, but will certainly take a stress-free crucial road win in a place that has been a house of horrors for the B'cos for quite some time. Defense came up big again with turnovers against a Chiefs offense that looked horrible. Running game was dominant and aside from some Orton turnovers (great game to get some of those out of your system), the offense did more than enough to make this a laugher by mid-3rd quarter. Another thing I noticed today, which was very nice to see, was the utter lack of penalties committed by the B'cos. That would be a good trend to continue from here on out. And yes, the Barrel Man died yesterday. You can only assume he would've loved this game. This one's for you, dude.

But honestly, what does this post have to do with Cutler and his Bears eeking a home win against the hapless Rams? Impressive....

The Not-So-Hot Heat

A pretty standard home blow-out win for the Nugs last night. ST and I sitting behind the basket about five rows up to the delight of all TNT viewers I imagine (see photo). The Nugs didn't dazzle with their play, but were still able to route Wade and his boys, which is pretty impressive I guess.

My favorite part of the evening was getting to heckle Craig Sager as he was walking court side looking like an arrogant prick. Oh yeah, ST also got introduced to former Colo Governor Beaker, errrrr, Bill Owens.

The other Can team didn't fair as well. Didn't see the replay of the disallowed goal, but it sounds like we kind of got jobbed. That weak call on Clark to give the Penns a 5-3 also sucked......

A Scrappy Point

That's a game that seemed pretty lost with only a minute left...but Duchey and TJ wanted to tally at least a point. Awesome empty net work, and a really resilient look for the Avs.

Andy didn't look too good throughout...but sometimes the O will pick you up. Also, sometimes Footer won't stand for a cheap goalie interference/injury-inducer (damn, that Ballard fucker sure hates goalies). Loved Foote's instant "smell the glove" shots at Ballard.
2 points would be preferred, and the Avs seem to be a team that "settles" quite a bit lately for the OTL...but the simple fact that they did get one point, and remain relevant is worthwhile, and that was pretty damn exciting there at the end...

A 2-0 Lead Stands Up?

Seems like about every game the Avs play they either fall behind 0-2 or take a 2-0 lead. Normally, that score doesn't mean shit and the team trailing has about a 50-50 shot of coming back to either take the lead or win. Not tonight. Andy is fairly stellar in the pipes (especially in the 3rd) and the combo of Duchene and Stewbag provides all of the offense needed to keep it at 2-0 for the entire game. Considering Jonsey is out for the year (hard to overstate what a bummer that is considering how he was playing) and the Duke is still on the shelf, it's imperative that others step up and pick up the scoring slack. I would love to see the Rook play a big part in filling that role...

Great start to a crucial roadie that comes on the heels of a brutal back-to-back set with the Wild. The PK was great tonight, but the trip could end badly if the Avs continue to spend as much time in the box as they did tonight.....More shutouts please....
